Maine man succumbs to injuries after snowmobile crashes into trees

HARRISON, Maine - A Naples man died on Saturday when the snowmobile he was driving veered off a trail and into trees.

Daniel J. Hammond, 46, was riding with a group of three friends on a snowmobile trail in Harrison around 10:30 a.m. when the group stopped to cross the Cape Monday Road. After two of his friends crossed the road, Hammond crossed the road with his other friend behind him. Upon crossing the road, Hammond traveled on the trail a short distance before driving off the trail and crashing into the trees.

Hammond was initially conscious after the crash, but succumbed to his injuries at the scene 20 minutes later. Hammond was wearing a helmet while driving his 2022 Ski-Doo 850 Back Country.

The Maine Warden Service continues to investigate the crash. Hammond was transported to Halls Funeral Home in Casco where he will be examined by the state medical examiner. The Harrison Fire Department, United Ambulance, and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office all assisted the Maine Warden Service at the crash scene.
