Man escapes serious injury in crash into gravestones

ROCHESTER - A Rochester man escaped serious injury Sunday when his car veered off the road near Franklin Street Cemetery and crashed into several gravestones, knocking them over in the process.

Police say Robert Rivard, 47, was wearing his seat belt and his air bags deployed in the 6 p.m. accident.

He was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with what were described as nonlife-threatening injuries.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol are suspected factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
