WELLS, Maine - A 22-year-old Massachusetts man died Sunday after the car he was driving drifted off the Maine Turnpike in Wells and struck a tree.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m. hen Kevin P. Mahoney of Dracut was driving a 2008 Buick Lacrosse southbound in the area of mile marker 18 when his vehicle veered off the right side of the highway into the woods. Mahoney, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased on scene. No other vehicles were involved, and speed appears to be a contributing factor.

The crash investigation is ongoing. The turnpike remained open and the flow of traffic was not affected. Wells Fire and Rescue and the Maine Turnpike Authority assisted on scene.
