Governor Kelly Ayotte recently joined Best Friends Animal Society to celebrate New Hampshire's status as a no-kill state alongside representatives from Mary's Dogs and Pet Tails Rescue in Northwood. The Governor is also encouraging Granite Staters looking to adopt a pet to visit a local shelter or rescue.
"New Hampshire is proud to be one of only two states in the nation to achieve no-kill status, thanks to the dedicated rescue organizations, shelters, volunteers, and Granite Staters who open their homes to pets in need," said Governor Ayotte.
Strafford County's animal shelter, the, Pope Memorial Humane Society, formerly known as the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, is located at 221 County Farm Road in Dover not far from the county courthouse.
The facility currently has 12 dogs and 11 cats available for adoption, and the governor is hoping Strafford County residents will keep in mind the thought of getting a new pet for the new year.
"I encourage anyone looking to add a new four-legged family member to look no further than our great rescues and shelters," Gov. Ayotte said. "Together, we can continue protecting animals and keep the Granite State the best place for families and pets to live."
In 2017, Lyman Pope Jr. made an extraordinary $1 million donation which allowed the shelter to move from its former site near the jail, which will soon become the county's permanent cold weather warming shelter for the homeless.
Even after helping build the new shelter, Pope's support did not end. In 2023, he made another landmark donation, this time to help the shelter grow even further. His gift laid the foundation for a 5,250-square-foot outdoor pavilion, a space that has allowed for increased enrichment, training, community events, play groups and adoptions, according to the shelter's website.
