NORTH ROCHESTER - Rochester will be the site of the first state-sanctioned medical marijuana grow facility that goes active after Sanctuary ATC was approved to begin cultivation here.

The medical cannabis won't be sold in Rochester, but at ATC alternative treatment center in Plymouth. The Rochester grow facility is in the Spaulding Mill complex on Spaulding Avenue very near the Lebanon border.

The development brings one step closer to fruition New Hampshire's promise to implement the legal use of medical marijuana, a step begun in the summer of 2013 when the bill was signed by Gov. Maggie Hassan.
There will be four treatment centers in New Hampshire in all operated by three vendors.

Medical marijuana cards began being issued last month ahead of schedule after an Alstead woman won in court the right to travel to Maine to get cannabis to help treat her cancer.

Officials say more than 100 New Hampshire residents have applied for the cards, which allow patients to hold up to two ounces of marijuana.

The other ATC operators are Prime Alternative Treatment Centers, with a dispensary in Merrimack and a cultivation site in Peterborough; and Temescal Wellness, with dispensaries in Dover and Lebanon, N.H., and a cultivation site in Manchester.
