The results of Tuesday's election leave the residents of Rochester's Ward 5 with no direct representation in the newly formed state rep District 2, which includes Milton and Milton Mills.
Of the six candidates that were running for the seat, only two were from Rochester, Democrats Marilyn Johnson Foster and Pamela Hubbard, who both came up short. The other candidate who didn't make the cut was Democrat Larry Brown of Milton.
In fact, District 2 was a clean sweep for Milton GOPers, with Glenn Bailey, Claudine Burnham and Michael Granger all moving forward to serve two-year terms in Concord.
Burnham told The Rochester Voice on Wednesday that the turnout at the Milton Polls on White Mountain Highway was heavier than the 2020 presidential election.
"We had an amazing turnout in District 2-Milton/Rochester Ward 5 yesterday," she said. "Not only did the majority of voters prefer to come in for same day voting, they were also willing to stand in line to cast their ballots."
Bailey came in first with 2,116 votes, with Burnham taking second with 2,057. Granger grabbed a District 2 state rep seat with 2,041 votes.
Brown ended up with 1,524 votes, Foster with 1,488, While Hubbard garnered 1,564.
Burnham said all three GOP candidates shuttled back and forth between the Milton and Ward 5 polls during Tuesday's vote.
She added she was amazed at the number of seniors who endured the hardships of coming to the polls on Election Day.
"I was personally amazed at the number of elderly and physically disabled who took the time to come in to vote in person," Burnham said. "Many said they wouldn't miss this opportunity."
Burham said during the campaign many expressed unease with the direction the nation is moving.
"The people of New Hampshire are very concerned about our state and the direction our country is going," she said. "I am so thankful to those who chose to vote for me, and I will do my best to serve the residents of Milton and Ward 5 as their state rep."
