WEST LEBANON, Maine - The teenager who went under while swimming in Milton Three Ponds on Saturday has died.

First responders from Farmington Fire and Rescue, Milton Fire and Rescue and Milton Police were on scene at the Prospect Hill Road canoe and kayak launch around 4:45 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.

According to the press release from New Hampshire Marine Patrol, the 17-year-old boy, who is from Milton, N.H., had a pulse after rescue personnel began CPR, but was pronounced dead later at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was swimming from the kayak and canoe launch to the bridge when he began to have difficulty and call for help, said Amy Yelinko of Milton, who pulled him from the bottom of the pond.

Yelinko said the teen had told friends he was going to swim to the rocks to jump off the bridge, but began calling for help soon after. She said her son pointed to where he'd gone under and she immediately swam out and began diving to pull him out.

She said she finally found him on the bottom and pulled him to the rocks on the Milton side of the bridge.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family.

The Garage Way bridge was shut down to all traffic for a period of time while the incident was investigated. It reopened around 6:30 p.m.

Social media posts late Saturday had kindled hope that the young man would survive.

Yelinko said this summer she's seen a lot of kids jumping from the Garage Way bridge with no adult supervision and hopes police crack down on the dangerous pastime.

The swimming hole and canoe and kayak launch at the bottom of Prospect Hill Road in Lebanon has been a favorite cooling off spot for years, while the Garage Way bridge that connects Lebanon and Milton has become increasingly congested with thrill seeking teens and even younger folk jumping off the span.
