N.H. man gets second DWI after taking down street sign

ROCHESTER - A New Hampshire man escaped injury but not a DWI when his car veered off a Rochester road and struck a street sign Thursday night.

The crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. when police say Garrett Sawyer, 26, of Derry was traveling east on Columbus Avenue in his 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, approached the intersection of Lowell Street and Columbus Avenue and then veered to the right. The car then drove over the grass medians and struck a street sign in the area of 45 Hancock St.

The vehicle came to rest in the middle of the roadway.

Sawyer was wearing his seat belt and both airbags deployed resulting in his not being injured.

Hancock Street was closed down during this investigation and once complete the roadway was opened to traffic.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.

Sawyer was subsequently arrested for DWI , second offense. His bail was set at $1,500 personal recognizance pending a court date next month in Rochester District Court.
