ROCHESTER - A New Jersey man was arrested on multiple charges after a head-on crash on the Spaulding Turnpike late Wednesday.
Police were called around 10:30 p.m. regarding a report of a hit and run crash on the Spaulding Turnpike near Exit 17, in Milton. The caller reported that a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2007 Chevrolet Impala sedan, driven by Corissa Babineau, 21, of Concord. The crash resulted in damage, but there were no injuries. Following the crash, the driver of the Toyota minivan fled the scene and continued southbound.
Three minutes after the initial crash was reported, a second crash was reported on the Spaulding Turnpike near the Cross Road overpass in Rochester. State Troopers assigned to the Troop A barracks responded and determined that the crash involved three vehicles, including the same Toyota minivan that was involved in the first crash.
At the second crash scene, the preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Toyota minivan, identified as Deivid Aquino De Oliveira, 40, of Newark, N.J., had been traveling southbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the minivan crossed the centerline into the path of a northbound 2019 Toyota Corolla sedan, driven by Ryan Moriarty, 44, of Milton, resulting in a head-on crash. The crash caused De Oliveira's minivan to spin and Moriarty's sedan to overturn. Both vehicles ultimately came to rest in the northbound lane of the highway. A third vehicle, a 2018 Jeep Compass driven by Hayley Cartier, 32, of East Wakefield, had been traveling directly behind Moriarty and was damaged as a result of the crash.
De Oliveira and Moriarty suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to an area hospital. The driver of the third vehicle, Cartier, was not hurt.
During the investigation, Troopers noted that De Oliveira displayed signs of impairment, and he was arrested at the hospital on felony aggravated driving under the influence of drugs or liquor and reckless conduct, along with misdemeanor charges of vehicular assault and conduct after an accident. Following his arrest, De Oliveira was given personal recognizance bail and released to the hospital for medical treatment, pending an appearance in Rochester District Court scheduled for Monday June 1.
No booking photo is available at this time.
While Troopers investigated the scenes of both crashes and emergency personnel worked to remove the vehicles involved, the Spaulding Turnpike was closed in both directions between Exit 16 in Rochester and Exit 17 in Milton for approximately four hours. The scene was cleared, and all lanes of travel were reopened at 2:35 a.m.
Due to the severity of the second crash, members of the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit and Troop E responded to the scene to assist members of Troop A with the investigation. Troopers were also assisted by officers from the communities of Rochester, Milton, and Wakefield, as well as by members of the Rochester Fire Department and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
All aspects of the crash remain under investigation. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Colin Burgess at Colin.R.Burgess@DOS.NH.GOV.
