Nute students get a kick out of karate intro

MILTON - A longtime karate instructor who teaches out of the Rochester Recreation Department visited Nute High gym teacher Mrs. Johnson’s personal fitness and health classes last week teaching students some of the philosophy of the venerable martial arts discipline as well as some of its moves.

Rochester Recreation Shotokan Karate Club (RRSKC) Steven Warren, known as Warren Sensei by students, has been training in the martial art of Shotokan karate for about 43 years.

 He spoke with the students about karate and its many benefits such as fitness, self-confidence and discipline. He told both classes that you should never give up and should always try your hardest at everything you do, whether it be karate, schoolwork, or running a 26-mile.

 Not only did Warren Sensei speak to the class, but he also gave them the opportunity to try some martial arts moves. Prior to getting into the training of karate, the students did a few of the many stretches that they do at RRSKC. He involved individuals of the class having them help demonstrate a block, or how to weaken a person’s grip. The students also learned how to properly make a fist, how to punch, and how to do a rising block that defends an attack to the face area.
