ROCHESTER - James S. Tilton, 87, of 18 Second Street died Thursday Jan. 23, 2014 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a period of failing health.

He was born June 19, 1926 in Deerfield, the son of Washington and Lois Ella (Southwick) Tilton. He has resided in this area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had worked in maintenance at the Pease Air Force Base in Newington. He retired in 1984 after 22 years of service at the air base. James was a wood enthusiast.

The widower of Joyce (Stevenson) Tilton who died in 2007, he is survived by one brother, George "Lindy" Tilton in Washington State; sisters-in-law, Beverly Cormier and Jane and husband Arthur Larochelle, all of Rochester; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

At his request there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stratham SPCA, 104 Portsmouth Ave, Stratham, N.H. 03885.
