ROCHESTER - An alert and determined off-duty Rochester Police Officer helped corral a Farmington woman who police say was driving drunk with a young child in the car.

It all began around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday when the off-duty officer saw a White Honda near Spaulding High heading north on Wakefield Street and noticed he couldn't see the driver. Moments later he saw what appeared to be a female sit up in the driver's seat. He also noticed the woman appeared to continually pass out and disappear from view and that the vehicle was all over the road.

The car then turned left onto Chestnut Hill Road with the off-duty officer following her reporting that she hit the curbing twice as she turned, according to Tuesday's police log.

A school bus helped to effect the collar as the impaired driver was forced to stop while the bus let children off in the area of 65 Chestnut Hill Road about a half mile north of the rear of Spaulding High.

"That's when the off-duty officer approached the woman, identified himself as a Rochester Police Officer and told her not to move," said Rochester Police Capt. Gary Boudreau today.

By then an on-duty officer had arrived at the scene where he performed a field sobriety test and determined the woman, who had a young child under 10 in the car, was impaired

Samantha Currier, 26, of 89 Spring St., Farmington, was arrested and charged with DUI and aggravated DUI for having a child in the car under the age of 10.

She was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail with an arraignment set for next month in Rochester District Court.

As a matter of routine the incident was referred to DCYF.
