On this day in 1979 millions of peoples' lives changed, that was the day the Sony Walkman was released! Changing the way we listened to music and experienced the world around us. This 14-ounce portable cassette player enabled people to listen to music wherever they went.
I was instantly hooked. What was the allure? Freedom!!! Suddenly I could listen to all those mixed tapes, that I had spent endless hours putting together, with a click of a button and wherever I wanted to! It was so liberating not to be tethered to a home stereo. The Walkman unmoored one. Bus rides were much more exciting when you could share new music with your friends. Or not in the mood to socialize.. simply disappear into an entire album by yourself.
I listen to music on my headphones, or earbuds these days, any place any time. It is like having your own personal soundtrack. At work, at my desk, driving my car, and when I'm doing nothing at all. I listen to music when I'm happy and when I'm sad. I listen to music on my own and even when in the company of others.
The Walkman absolutely changed my world... I am hooked just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up!
Now get out there and listen to some live local music...
