WASHBURN, Maine - The Maine Warden Service is investigating a snowmobile crash that took the life of a 17-year-old female.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday when a 17-year-old male was driving a snowmobile down Story Street in Washburn with a 17-year-old female as his passenger, according to a statement released on Saturday evening.

The snowmobile driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he came upon a 90-degree turn in the road, failed to make the turn and struck the curb, causing the snowmobile to flip over, and ejecting both the driver and his passenger, safety officials say. The snowmobile and the two teenagers struck the side of a house after being ejected. Both victims were wearing helmets.

The 17-year-old female was killed instantly, and the 17-year-old male sustained multiple injuries. He was initially transported to CARY Medical enter then later transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical in Bangor.

As this is an active investigation, the names of the juveniles are being withheld. The incident remains under investigation.
