DOVER - The Dover Police Department is conducting an investigation into thefts from motor vehicles that occurred on Sunday.
The police department received two reports of thefts that occurred at the Longhill Dog Park, located at 42 Longhill Road, Dover. In both incidents, victims reported that wallets were stolen which contained identification cards, checks, credit and debit cards and other personal information.
During one of the thefts, the suspect smashed the vehicle's window to gain access.
The suspects were reportedly driving a dark blue sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, and
displaying a vanity plate with some variation of "TR SLAYER" or "T1RESLYR."
Police say they believe the suspects are part of an out-of-state organized crime group that is known for "smash and grab" thefts with the intent of stealing personal and banking information to commit financial frauds. Thefts of this nature typically occur at gyms, recreation areas, or other locations where citizens will leave their purse or bag in the vehicle for a brief time.
Police are asking the public to follow these tips to avoid being a victim:
Lock Your Vehicle: Always make sure to lock your vehicle's doors whenever you leave it unattended. This simple step is the first line of defense against opportunistic thieves. Keeping your vehicle securely locked before walking away can significantly reduce the risk of theft.
Avoid Leaving Valuables in Sight: Keep valuables such as electronics, purses, wallets, and other items out of plain sight. It's best to not store these items in your car at all, but if you must leave items in your vehicle, store them in the trunk or glove compartment before arriving at your destination.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you observe anyone loitering around vehicles, attempting to break in, or engaging in suspicious behavior, report it to the police department immediately. Your prompt action can help prevent thefts and apprehend criminals.
