Pedestrian struck and killed while walking in and out of traffic on Route 16

DOVER - A pedestrian walking in and out of traffic toward the General Sullivan Bridge on Route 16 was struck and killed on Wednesday.

The event unfolded around 5:45 p.m. when police dispatchers began receiving reports of a pedestrian walking in the northbound right breakdown lane on Route 16 headed toward the General Sullivan Bridge. Callers stated that the pedestrian was moving in and out of the travel lanes, according to a Dept. of Safety press release sent out on Thursday.

The pedestrian, an adult male, was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigators.

During an investigation multiple lanes in this area were closed for about two and a half hours.

The name of the pedestrian is being withheld.
