MILTON - September and October are the perfect months to take a walk in the woods, and one of the best places to take that easy-to-moderate hike is the Plummers Ridge Hiking Trail in Milton.

You can park your vehicle and access the trail system from one of three points: the New Hampshire Farm Museum parking lot off White Mountain Highway, the Branch Hill Farm (across the street from the Farm Museum) and McKenzie's Farm on Northeast Pond Road.

A display board denotes the age of various trees throughout the trails property.

Trail maps at each entry point provide one of the best trail guides you'll ever see, with easy directions to trails and points of interest along the way.

You can even hike from the Branch Hill Farm trailhead across from the Farm Museum all the way to McKenzie's Farm where you can pick a couple of honeycrisp apples for a snack along the way.

The trails are all easy to moderate and beautifully marked by Milton Boy Scout Troop #155 members. Eagle Scout Stephen Steer headed up the effort as part of his Eagle project, which included building a gorgeous kiosk and installing easy to read signage along the trails.

All of the work took Steer and fellow Scouts hundreds of hours, he said during his Eagle installation this past April at Milton's American Legion Hall.

Beautifully lacquered signs point you in the right direction.

The interconnecting trails range from less than a quarter of a mile to about a mile and provide beautiful vistas, including some water views along the Branch River.

There are even some picnic tables along the way.

The public is welcome but asked to respect these beautiful conservation lands.

Dogs are also welcome but need to be leashed and picked up after.
