Police: Air, rail travel will be down, but roadways will be busy

CONCORD - New Hampshire State Police today urged Granite Staters to take on the roads this holiday weekend and to know that while travel overall is expected to be down, that the majority of Americans this Thanksgiving will be traveling the highways and byways of our state.

The Thanksgiving holiday represents the busiest travel weekend of the year in the United States. It should also noted that statistically, traffic-related fatalities increase around the holidays; however, traffic crashes can be reduced significantly by being mindful of the following traffic safety tips:

Plan Ahead:

Don't drink and drive. Those choosing to consume alcohol should designate a sober driver in advance, should use a taxi or public transportation, should call a sober friend or family member for a ride, or should give another person their keys for the day/night.

Don't drive distracted:

Put down the electronic devices and keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Slow Down:

Speed kills, so please slow down, as your family and friends would much rather have you arrive late, then not at all.

Wear Your Seatbelt:

Seatbelts save lives, so always be sure to buckle-up every time you are in a vehicle.

Don't Drive Aggressively or Tailgate Others:

Aggressive driving can lead to crashes and road rage situations, so travel at a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you.
