LEBANON - Police are reminding folks today that whenever you're in an accident, especially one in which there is personal injury or property damage, it's your obligation to call 911 immediately.

The comments come in the wake of an accident that occurred almost a week ago in which a Lebanon woman crashed her vehicle into a utility pole just north of the intersection of Heath and Jim Grant roads.

Tracy Cram, 46, of Dixon Road, should have called 911 immediately after the crash, State Trooper John Darcy said today.

Lebanon Fire and Rescue crews who responded to the crash, found the doors locked and the occupants, which included Cram and a family member, gone.

State Police were then notified and Darcy arrived about a half hour later, he said.

After getting Cram's home address from the license plate number, he said he went to their residence, saw two sets of footprints in the snow heading to the house and knocked on the door, which no one answered.

The vehicle was then towed from the scene and a hold was placed on it, according to police.

On Saturday Cram called police around 8 a.m., Darcy said, notifying them of the accident.

Darcy said the cause of the accident was likely a combination of road conditions and speed, noting that the area had received a goodly amount of snow earlier on Friday.

Cram was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash (Class D misdemeanor) and operating without a license in violation of restrictions due to her failure to wear corrective lenses while driving as she is required (Class E misdemeanor).

She suffered no significant injuries, however the other family member whom police did not name suffered facial lacerations, Darcy said.

"Any accident with personal injury or when you crash into a utility pole has got to be reported," Darcy said.

It should be noted that Cram was not charged with fleeing the scene of an accident as Foster's Daily Democrat and the Portland Press Herald both said in their headlines above the story on Monday.

A Class D crime is punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, while Class E crimes can result in six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Cram's arraignment is set for June at Springvale District Court.
