SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - A 19-year-old died Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while in their vehicle on Belle Marsh Road, police say.

The victim was alone in their vehicle, which was located by York Police about 3:15 p.m. as it traveled along Mountain Road in York, according to a statement released by the South Berwick Police Department.

York police had been asked to check on the driver's well-being, but the driver initially refused to pull over and continued into South Berwick, where the driver pulled over on Belle Marsh Road but refused to communicate with police, according to the statement.

Officers heard a single gunshot and upon approaching the car found the teen, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation by the South Berwick Police Department, with assistance from the York Police Department, is under way.

The Maine attorney general's office was notified of the death, and the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Augusta will conduct an autopsy, according to the statement.
