ROCHESTER - Police say a Gonic woman on Saturday tried to kidnap the baby of a Rochester motorist who had stopped to give her a lift.

The bizarre incident began around 8:40 a.m. when Rochester Police responded to Washington Street for a reported disturbance in the roadway.

Police learned that a 52-year-old Rochester man was driving on Washington Street with his year-old daughter when he saw the woman walking in the roadway, so he stopped to check on her and asked if she needed a ride.

The female said yes, and got into the man's vehicle. The two are not acquaintances.

Soon after, the female told the victim that she was taking his daughter, and then made attempts to unbuckle the infant. A struggle then ensued between the two while the man tried to pull the vehicle over and stop.

The female then grabbed for his keys and broke the vehicle key in half. As the vehicle came to a stop, the female was able to take the child and fled on foot.

When the man caught up with her she punched him two times, police say.

Once officers arrived they went to detain the female who initially resisted and struggled with an officer.

Taken into custody was Joanne E. Shaw, 25, of 7 Piper Lane. Lane was charged with felony kidnapping; and two counts of simple assault, criminal mischief and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors.

She was held on $5,000 cash bail, and transported to the Strafford County House of Corrections pending her arraignment today at 12:30 p.m. at Strafford Superior Court.

The infant was not injured.
