Rape defense class scheduled for October at Rochester Ice Arena

ROCHESTER - The Rochester Police Department and Rochester NH Recreation & Arena will host another upcoming R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) basic self-defense for women program during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This course is two days long. Attendance is required on days 1 & 2. An optional simulation will be provided at the end of day 2. Simulation is a chance for students to put the techniques they learned together in a scenario-based controlled environment.

The RAD course will be held on Oct. 14 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Oct. 15 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with simulation exercises noon-4 p.m.

The class will be held on the second floor at the Rochester Ice Arena. 63 Lowell St., in Rochester. Attendees may enter through the front door to the right of the building that faces the road.

The cost is $10 per person by cash or check, which can be made payable to the Rochester Police Benevolent Association. Financial assistance to attend the program is available by contacting Lt. Elizabeth Turner at elizabeth.turner@rochesternh.gov . The money for this program helps pay for yearly instructor certifications and replace worn-out equipment so that future courses can be put on.

Program Requirements: You must be a female 16 years or older to participate in this course. We ask that you do not attend if you are pregnant due to many of the physical techniques that will be taught. We will be hosting more courses in the future.

Things to bring/wear:
• Please wear athletic clothing (a portion of the first two days will include a presentation and then hands-on training)
• Water bottle/snacks
• Closed-toed running/athletic shoes
• License/ID

Registration: To register for this course go to the Rochester Recreation Department office at the Rochester Community Center (150 Wakefield Street Rochester NH) and fill out a registration form with payment. A parent or guardian must fill out registration for participants under 18 years of age. This course has a 20-person capacity.

The Rape Aggression Defense Basic Personal Defense System is a national program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques taught for women only. The goal of R.A.D. is to provide realistic self-defense options to women, regardless of their level of physical conditioning.
