Relaxing atmosphere, exotic taste, gluten free: It's like hitting the trifecta

DOVER - Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Dover lies a culinary hub of quiet civility, gracious dining and exotic flavors.

Taste of India, located at 55 Main St. just below Janetos Market, is now in its 30th year at the same location, and the service and quality of food has been consistently excellent over the decades.

On Monday we stopped in for a couple of their luncheon specials, each served with rice, chutney and papadom, a seasoned flatbread made from dried dough of black gram bean flour and cooked with dry heat.

The papadom comes with two sauces, one hot and one mild.

Their entrees are also offered with three levels of spice, from mild to wild.

For an entree Martha got the Lamb Saag, cooked with spinach in a creamy sauce, while I got the Chicken Curry, tender, boneless chicken cooked in a thick gravy of exotic spices and herbs.

For an appetizer we had Vegetable Pakora, assorted vegetable fritters gently seasoned and deep fried, The fritters were both sweet and savory, almost like having dessert for an appetizer.

Speaking of dessert don't miss out on their homemade mango ice cream, which is very refreshing and sweet, but much lighter than ice cream and more like ice milk.

With the two entrees, the appetizer, the dessert and a chai tea, the bill plus tip was less than $40, with plenty for another meal in the doggie bag.

You'll find the atmosphere pleasantly tranquil and the service extremely knowledgeable and pleasant.

And if you're gluten intolerant, with the exception of a couple of items, the menu is totally gluten free.
