It won't exactly be toasty, but it may feel that way when temperatures in the Greater Rochester area make their way out of the single digits and into the 40s this week.
During much of December, a weakening of the polar vortex opened the gates of the Arctic while a southward dip in the jet stream channeled the frigid air across the central and eastern United States, according to Accuweather.
The deep freeze continues today with a high of just 21 with a coating to an inch of snow this evening, but take heart; the winter warmup begins on Tuesday when the sun breaks through, the wind subsides and the region sees a high of 32.
But it gets better. On Wednesday watch folks out in their shorts and shirtsleeves when temps reach a balmy 40.
The forecasted highs for the rest of the week include 42 on Thursday, 41 on Friday, 47 on a rainy Saturday and 42 on Sunday.
The extended forecast shows high temps in the mid- to high 30s most of next week, too, giving folks and their furnaces a bit of a break from the bitter cold.
