DOVER - Rita Mary Shepperd, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on January 4, 2026, holding hands with her beloved husband and surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, Rita was the daughter of Thomas and Delia O'Neill. She grew up in a lively household with her four brothers--Jim, John, Tom, and Bob--whose love and laughter helped shape her joyful spirit.
Rita married the love of her life, Clinton Shepperd, and together they recently celebrated 72 wonderful years of marriage--a true testament to their deep love, devotion, and unwavering partnership.
Together, Rita and Clinton proudly raised five sons: Bill, Bob, Brian, Jim, and Joe. Rita and Clinton welcomed each of their sons' wives--Terry, Penny, and Deb, and former daughters-in-law Donna, Diane and Christine--as daughters, not "in-laws." Rita's greatest pride was her family, which grew to include seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
Rita was the very definition of an incredible mother. She wore every hat imaginable--taxi driver, short-order cook, event scheduler, business manager, nurse, psychiatrist, referee, laundromat operator--and did it all with warmth, humor, and an ever-present smile.
She was caring, forgiving, and deeply devoted to family and friends. Rita loved everyone she met--unless, of course, they spoke ill of one of her boys! She cherished gatherings with loved ones and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with Clinton by her side.
A devout Catholic, Rita found great comfort in her faith. Her life's dream was to be a mother, and she fulfilled it beautifully, raising her family with love and grace--even through 35 years of Clinton's shift work and his year-long tour of duty in Vietnam.
After her sons were grown, Rita began a new chapter working for Leoca Construction from 1980 until her retirement in 1985.
