RPL trust fund dedicated to purchasing DVDs on outdoor life expands to books

ROCHESTER - A trust fund dedicated to the Rochester Public Library's purchasing videos on outdoor topics like hunting and fishing has been expanded to allow for the timely purchase of books.

The James Edgerly Trust Fund, established in 1986, was originally intended to allow for the acquisition of videos on outdoor topics.

Edgerly, an an avid sportsman, served as a Fish and Game Commissioner for Strafford County and believed that the future of hunting and fishing in New Hampshire depended on the understanding and appreciation of young people for the outdoor heritage offered by the area's natural resources.

According to Library Director Marie Lejeune, when the trust was created, videos were very popular, and there were many available on topics related to outdoor activities. However, over the years, videos, and now DVDs, have been replaced by other technologies.

"In 2021, the Trustees of the Trust Funds contacted representatives of the James Edgerly Trust to ask if the terms of the trust could be expanded to include the purchase of books," said Lejeune. "They graciously agreed to that expansion."

Lejeune says that in January 2022, the Library purchased the first installment of 17 books on topics that include hiking, camping, snowshoeing, fly-fishing, and kayaking. Some acquisitions include "New Hampshire's 52 with a View: A Hiker's Guide", "The Tracker's Field Guide" and "Discovering the Appalachian Trail."
