ROCHESTER - Russell "Rusty" Hardy died unexpectedly on June 11, 2025, while hiking Pikes Peak in Colorado, a summit he had long dreamed of reaching. With the sky above him and the trail beneath his feet, he left this world doing what he loved most: exploring the wild with wonder in his eyes and freedom in his soul.
Born on October 21, 1969, in Rochester, New Hampshire, to Russell Hardy and Hazel (Goodwin) Poulin, Rusty lived life as an adventurer from the very beginning. As a boy, he was active in scouting where he developed a deep love for the outdoors, self-reliance, and adventure. He spent much of his youth living off the land, raising farm animals, and caring for horses, a lifelong passion that shaped his deep connection to animals and nature. These early experiences formed the foundation of his fearless spirit and endless curiosity.
Rusty had a restless soul and a boundless love for the open road. Over the years, he fulfilled one of his greatest dreams by traveling to all 50 US states, collecting stories, friendships, and memories in every corner of the country.
He was predeceased by his father and his sister Patricia "Patti" Harmon. He leaves behind his fiancée Jeanine Meditz, his beloved dog Rocky, his devoted sisters Brenda McCrary, Linda Farley and her husband Richard, Sandra Hardy, and Debra Hardy, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family including his South Carolina Family, and friends who adored him.
Rusty worked for many years as a meat cutter at Hannaford Supermarket where he was known for his hard work, good humor, and warm smile. He was a proud and passionate Dallas Cowboys fan, a gifted storyteller with legendary tales of hitchhiking adventures, and a lover of nature. He lived to tell stories of the past and often shared old family photos, keeping memories alive for everyone around him.
Whether he was taking his dogs on marathon walks, hiking mountain trails, or sharing wild stories from his travels, Rusty's energy was magnetic. His laughter was contagious, his heart was enormous, and his zest for life left an impression on everyone he met.
Rusty's free spirit and fearless approach to life continue to inspire those who knew him to live boldly, love deeply, and never stop exploring. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever admired.
