ROCHESTER - It has been a sad week for many musicians in the Greater Rochester area....we lost a great one this week when Pete Peterson passed away. Our condolences go out to all who were so privileged to have him in their lives, if only for a moment. This remembrance of why Pete was so special is put in words here by my very good friend Jim Callery, who wrote this about our dear friend.
"I'm not really sure where to begin with the extensive experience, love, and joy Pete Peterson provided us with for all these years. It's virtually impossible to list all of his accomplishments in various bands and projects that he played with.
"I will tell you the story of the first time I met him and what that was like. I'm guessing it was around the mid 90s, and my friend Mark Doran invited me out to go see Pete host an open mic. I was definitely nervous, having never done that before, and I'm sure he could sense it. But he put me at ease, and I jammed with him and his band.
"One of the songs we did that night was "Knocking on Heavens Door"..., It seems so appropriate now when I look back at it. Then we did a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe." He and I traded solos back-and-forth and in those moments, I felt alive and that I belonged right where I was. I think the third song we did was a blues, jam, and again, we traded licks back-and-forth.
"As you know, he was a very able guitar player, as am I, so needless to say, we had a great time on stage that night. He made me feel at home at a time and place I did not initially. My friendship with him would continue over many years, and I was also friends with Chad Owen, bassist of their band Rhythm Method. With that, I can take some solace, knowing that they are reunited once again, jamming somewhere in the cosmos making beautiful music together right now.
"To say he will be missed doesn't scratch the surface of all the love and light he shared with us all. He made me a better guitar player, to this day. Thanks Pete."
