LONDONDERRY - New Hampshire U.S. Senate hopeful Kevin Smith called President Biden's planned remarks today when he'll take credit for the Portsmouth Harbor turning basin project as nothing less than "political fraud."

Smith was appointed to serve as Pease Development Authority (PDA) Chairman in 2017, and oversaw the Portsmouth Harbor in that role. He resigned his chairmanship in January to run for the U.S. Senate.

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Kevin Smith is hoping to take on Democrat Maggie Hassan in November.

"President Trump is the one who stripped away red tape and government inefficiency and revived this longtime-planned project, not Joe Biden. As the former PDA Chair who oversaw the Portsmouth Harbor during this project's time, I know who deserves what credit, and Joe Biden's visit today is nothing short of political fraud." Smith said.

According to a press release from Smith, the Piscataqua River turning basin dredging was originally authorized under a 1962 law, and widened the river's turning basin from 800 feet to 1,200 feet to allow large ships to move safely.
The 2018 "America's Water Infrastructure Act of 2018" was signed into law by President Trump, while Smith was PDA Chair, and revived the project.
The 2020 "Water Resources Development Act of 2020" was signed into law by President Trump and sped the project up further, placing a 180-day time frame to report back on progress.
The Army Corps of Engineers subsequently included $18.2 million for the project in their FY 2021 Workplan which was released on Jan. 19, 2021, still under President Trump's administration and Kevin Smith's tenure as PDA Chair.
"If it weren't for President Trump, this project never would've seen the light of day." Smith added "Here's the reality. Joe Biden is desperately trying to deflect from his abysmal record. If disguising his reckless spending and record inflation means ripping off President Trump's accomplishments, then I'm going to call BS when I see it."

"Americans are sick and tired of politicians like Joe Biden and Maggie Hassan who shamelessly resort to gimmicks and lies to win over voters," he added. "There is a reckoning coming in November because it's time for them to be held accountable for their reckless policies that have driven our economy into the ground."
