COPYRIGHT 2017©ROCHESTER - Police say an Exeter man who stole "a bunch of merchandise" from Walmart on Thursday tried to flee arriving Police Officers who found a substantial amount of drugs on the suspect after his apprehension following a short footchase.

Police said they were first alerted to the suspect's alleged shoplifting by the store's loss prevention unit at 10:35 p.m., Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas said today.

"As the units were approaching he exits setting off security alarms," Thomas added.

According to police, the suspect than ran toward Tractor Supply just west of Walmart where police caught up with him near the treeline.

"As he was running he was seen throwing several items, including a jacket," Thomas said.

Arrested at the scene was Jeffrey D. Coughlin, 33, of 54 Hayes Road, Exeter.

Once in custody, Couglin was found to have in his possession a substance thought to be heroin, and more heroin was found in the jacket he allegedly tossed during the pursuit, Thomas said.

Coughlin was charged with two counts of possession of controlled drugs, willful concealment, resisting arrest or detention, contempt and drug trafficking.

The contempt charge was for being out on bail from a March 10 willful concealment arrest at the Rochester Kohl's.

Couglin, who formerly lived in Alton, was held on no bail pending an arraignment later today.
