SOMERSWORTH - A Somersworth woman was killed on Tuesday when she was struck by a vehicle while walking across Route 108 around 10 p.m.

The accident occurred near the Dover line, prompting a response from Dover Police, Fire and Rescue, as well as Somersworth responders.

Once on scene, Dover Rescue located a female that was struck by a 2014 GMC Terrain operated by Stephen Long, 59, of Dover.

The female had life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Katie Merrihew of Somersworth.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Merrihew was attempting to cross Route 108 in the area of the Shell gas station and convenience store when she was struck by Long in the northbound lane of travel, according to a Somersworth Police press release, which also noted there was no indication of impairment or improper speed.

The Strafford County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team was activated and is investigating the crash along with the Somersworth Police Department. Route 108 was briefly shut down and then reopened to one lane of travel for a few hours after the crash to allow for proper scene documentation and an investigation.

If anyone has any information on this case, they are encouraged to call Lieutenant Matthew Duval at the Somersworth Police Department at (603) 692-3131 or our anonymous Somersworth Crime Line at 692-9111.
