Spaulding grads urged to stay positive and 'drown out the negative'

ROCHESTER - While it may not have been a picture perfect day for parents trying to click the quintessential commencement shot from two crowded photo corrals, everything else about Friday's graduation ceremonies at Hugo Bolin Field was just that: picture perfect.

The weather, which called for rain off and on throughout the day, welcomed the nearly 300 seniors graduating with blue skies and beautiful, thick - but not threatening - clouds.

Keynote speaker Retiring Superintendent Michael Hopkins, who opened by noting he usually talked only about 25 seconds during previous commencement exercises, urged the Class of 2019 to have "positive thoughts."

"Have positive thoughts," said Hopkins who is leaving after a 41-year career at Spaulding. "Make the positive so loud the negative can't be heard."

Class Salutatorian Ben Mathias urged his fellow graduates to "embrace the unexpected," while Valedictorian Paisley Garland, who famously received only two grades that weren't A+ at Spaulding, opened by saying, "I'll do algebra, I'll do trig, but graphing is where I draw the line."

Class President Class Dominic Lynch also brought some laughs, admitting that as a freshman, he believed seniors when they said the school had a pool on the fourth floor.

the school: an arch at the entrance to Bolin Field welcoming visitors to "Spaulding High, Home of the Raiders."

The graduates, clad in a sea of red and white, displayed their creativity in a wide array of mortarboard adornments with one saying, "I'll keep my friends close but my anemones closer."

Another noted, "Oh the places I will go but country roads will take me home."
