DOVER - An East Rochester man faces decades in prison after an eight-count indictment accuses the 39-year-old of violent raping a 61-year old female, allegedly telling her at one point, "spread them or it is going to hurt more."

John Stonis, of 7 Gina Drive, used "superior physical strength," ignored pleas to stop and unlawfully confined the victim during the March 30, 2017 incident, according to the indictment.

Stonis was also indicted on three counts of simple assault for allegedly fighting with a pair of arresting officers who responded to the scene around 1 a.m. Stonis is said to have kicked one officer in the leg twice and another in the chest.

"When the officers responded he was uncooperative and assaulted them, so he was taken straight to county jail," said Rochester Police Capt. Todd Pinkham today.

The indictment lists Rochester as where the incident took place, but Pinkham declined to comment on where in the city the alleged rape occurred. He also said he couldn't comment on who made the call to police.

Stonis, who is currently out on bail, was also indicted on rape and second-degree assault charges in November 2017 in connection with an incident that occurred on Sept. 30 of that year that involved the same woman.

According to the 2017 indictment, Stonis forced himself on the victim engaging in multiple sex acts "by overcoming her through the actual application of physical force, physical violence or superior physical strength."

The earlier case has still not been resolved, Assistant County Attorney David Rotman told the Union Leader of Manchester.

The most recent Strafford County grand jury indictments were handed down June 20 and released on Thursday.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, rather that enough evidence has been gathered to move forward to trial.
