ALFRED, Maine - Lt. Louis Nyitray, who has commanded the State Police Barracks at Troop A in Alfred for eight years, retired earlier this month.

Nyitray was at the Troop A helm when Lebanon was transitioned into full coverage by State Police beginning in March 2013.

Prior to that State Police and the York County Sheriff's Office had taken monthly turns covering Lebanon, a balky unwieldy method of law enforcement that hindered crime investigations and citizen complaints.

Nyitray wholly backed the concept of exclusive coverage by State Police and at the time of transition told The Lebanon Voice his troopers assigned to the town were "enjoying the fact they're in a set town and taking pride in ownership of the area to ensure they provide the best public service to the community."

Nyitray's law enforcement career began with the Auburn Police Department where he served two years, followed by his becoming a State Trooper in in 1984.

He was promoted to sergeant in the State Police communications division in 2004 and to Lieutenant of Troop A in 2007.

During his career, Nyitray served as a K-9 handler and instructor and saw service in every county of the state except one.

In a Maine State Police Facebook page post, Nyitray credited his wife, Janet, for all the success he has experienced over the years and recognized that being the spouse of a police officer is an endeavor of the utmost difficulty.

The couple have been married for 31 years. They intend to retire to someplace warmer where they don't have to shovel snow.
