DOVER - A just-released inmate from the Strafford County Jail stole a mountain bike from in front of the Strafford County Courthouse on Monday "because he needed a ride home," Strafford County Sheriff's Office officials said today.

Deputies got involved around 2:20 p.m. after an adult male said his blue Mountain Bike and black back pack were stolen from the front of the Strafford County Justice and Administrative Building while he was conducting business in the building.

The victim told deputies he parked his bike and went into the building for about 20 minutes only to find it missing when he returned.

Strafford County Sheriff Deputies and Strafford County Sheriff Court Security Officers viewed video footage of the theft, which showed a tall male wearing all dark clothing, take the bike from the front of the building.

A short while later, a Sheriff's Deputy, assigned to the case located the suspect riding the bike on Old Dover Road in Rochester. The defendant told the deputy that he was just released from the Strafford County House of Corrections and took the bike because he needed a ride home.

Anthony Wallace Freeman, 19, of 81 Main St. East Rochester, was charged with receiving stolen property, a misdemeanor with an arraignment set for later today in Rochester District Court.

The mountain bike and back pack were returned to their rightful owner.
