Suspects in Sanford stabbing of homeless man charged with burglary, assault

SANFORD - Two Sanford men have been arrested in an assault on a homeless man early Thursday morning.
Derrick Roberts-Poulin and Jordan Roberge, both 21, were charged with robbery and elevated aggravated assault.
Police say William Southworth, 38, was stabbed in the back multiple times, but have not yet identified which of the suspects was involved in the stabbing.
The department's Criminal Investigation Division worked through the day Thursday piecing the case together, said Police spokesman Matthew D. Gagne in a statement sent out today.
During the attack that occurred on Thursday around 4:30 a.m. the pair also stole a bicycle from Southworth.
The attack occurred at the intersection of Emery Street and Heritage Crossing.
Gunshots were also heard during the altercation but Sanford Police have not identified who may have fired a weapon.
Witnesses said two males had approached Southworth and stole his bicycle prompting a confrontation during which 3-4 gunshots were fired by one of the male assailants.
Southworth was transported by Sanford Fire/Rescue to Maine Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.
