Traffic stops leads to charge of heroin possession for East Wakefield man

ROCHESTER - An elderly East Wakefield man was charged with trafficking heroin and crack cocaine after a traffic stop Saturday on Columbus Avenue.

Police say William Robert Varney, 79, of 1974 Province Lake Road, was in the area of Quick Cash Trading Center when he was stopped by an officer for a motor vehicle infraction.

While speaking with Varney the officer noticed some drugs in the vehicle, police say.

Varney was charged with felony possession of more than five grams of heroin and/or crack, a charge that carries a maximum 15-year sentence in state prison.
