SANFORD - Police say a woman drove her vehicle onto a Sanford park during a baseball game and struck a local man as he stood by the main gate, killing him.
The incident happened around 7:10 on Friday as Sanford Regional Communication received a call of a female operating a vehicle on the field of the Goodall Park during a baseball game.
The vehicle entered the park through the main gate and drove onto the field, a Sanford police statement said, forcing bystanders and ballplayers to scatter to avoid the vehicle as it drove erratically on the ballfield.
The vehicle struck a closed gate and then sped toward the open main gate, striking a pedestrian who was trying to close the gate to prevent her driving through it, according to a post on a Sanford Community Facebook Page.
The vehicle then sped from the scene.
The pedestrian who was struck, Douglas Parkhurst, 68, of West Newfield, died en route to the hospital.
Carol Sharrow, 51, of Sanford, was later arrested and charged with manslaughter and taken to York County Jail.
A Friday night post by Sanford baseball on a Sanford Community Facebook page said, "As you are all aware by now our baseball community was struck by tragedy tonight. We want to share our heartfelt gratitude that physically all of the players from Babe Ruth and Little League are safe and our deep sorrow to the family of the brave man that gave his life tonight protecting others."
It went on to say that games will continue today despite the tragedy and urged community members to attend.
"Two of our Minor Boy teams that witnessed this event tonight will play a doubleheader tomorrow morning at LL Park starting at 9 a.m. We encourage any community members that can make it, players to come with their jerseys on, to come support these 8,9&10 years olds. Let's come together to show community pride and help these boys feel safe to return to their beloved field," the post read.
Sharrow will be held without bail pending an arraignment on Monday.
This case remains open and under investigation by members of Sanford Police and Maine State Police. The Sanford Police Department is asking that anyone who has video of the events that transpired to please contact us at 207-324-9170 ext. 1.
