Transient out on bail arrested twice Sunday morning

ROCHESTER - A Rochester transient out on bail for filing a false report to police earlier this month was arrested twice on Sunday in connection with two more incidents.

Police say William Whicher, 24, stole an "End 68 Hours of Hunger" donation jar from the Stop and Go Deli on Columbus Avenue around 9 a.m., then began walking up trying to thumb a ride on Route 125 toward Brock Street where he was stopped by a Rochester officer.

While one officer stayed with Whicher, another went back to the convenience store to view the surveillance video, which showed Whicher as the suspect.

While Whicher was being booked around 11 a.m., another officer who had an arrest warrant already filed for an incident in which Whicher was a suspect in the theft of a cellphone from a vehicle parked at Walgreen's several days ago got it signed by a judge so police were able to proceed with a second arrest.

Details were not immediately available on the Aug. 10 false report incident.

Whicher was to face arraignment on the recent charges today.

He also faces a charge of soliciting rides or business for allegedly trying to hitchhike up Route 125 on Sunday and contempt for committing the alleged crimes while out on bail.
