Troopers respond to dozens of crashes, scores of vehicles off road during storm

CONCORD - New Hampshire State Troopers responded to more than 160 weather-related calls statewide during the two-day winter storm that delivered slick and snow-covered roads in various parts of the state.

Between 1 p.m. on Sunday and 9 p.m. Monday, Troopers responded to reports of 46 crashes, seven of which included injuries.

Troopers also responded to reports of 77 vehicles off the road and assisted abut 40 additional drivers.

During the snowfall, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation reduced speed limits on Interstates 89, 93, 293, 393, and 95, as well as on Routes 101 and 16, and the F.E. Everett and Spaulding Turnpikes.

The State Police remind drivers that during winter storms road conditions can change rapidly, and caution is encouraged during hazardous conditions. While behind the wheel, drivers should maintain safe speeds that allow for increased reaction times and keep an appropriate distance from other vehicles, including plow trucks, to prevent collisions.

Drivers are also reminded of state laws requiring them to give plenty of space to disabled vehicles on the side of the road and to clear their vehicles of snow and ice before driving. RSA 265:37-a, commonly known as Sherrill's Law, requires drivers to slow down, move out of lanes that are partially or wholly blocked when it's safe to do so, and give plenty of space to vehicles displaying warning signals. RSA 265:79-b, commonly known as Jessica's Law, requires drivers to remove snow and ice from their vehicles before traveling. Violators are subject to fines or additional penalties for subsequent offenses.
