Vermont man and his grandson killed when struck by car in Sanford

SANFORD, Maine - A Vermont man and his grandson were killed on Wednesday when they were struck by a vehicle in Sanford.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. in the area of 19 Old Falls Road.

When officers arrived they saw that a 2000 Chevrolet Equinox had veered off from the roadway after turning onto Old Falls Road from Kennebunk Road. When the vehicle left the roadway it struck Michael Gilbar, 65. of Jericho, Vt., and his grandson, a 15-year-old whose name was not released.

Michael Gilbar was transported by ambulance to Sanford Regional Airport for Lifeflight but was pronounced dead before Lifeflight transport. The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Equinox was transported by ambulance to Southern Maine Healthcare with what were described as nonlife threatening injuries.

The crash is being reconstructed by the York County Sheriff's Department. Its cause is still under investigation.
