ROCHESTER - About the only thing we could've taken exception to with regard to the light lunch we had at the OuR House Café on Wednesday was the fact that the Vegetable Beef Soup was more like Beef Stew, but that was a good thing, too.
That's pretty high praise for any eatery, but this is no ordinary luncheonette. The OuR House Café is staffed by students at the R.W. Creteau Technology Center adjacent to Spaulding High.
The student cooks, waiters and cashiers are all enrolled in the Restaurant Management Program at the Tech Center, learning how to run a restaurant and how to keep the customers coming back.
And we certainly will. As we said, we had a cup of the Vegetable Beef Soup, and with absolutely no fear of impeachment, I will tell you that it was simply the best Vegetable Beef Soup I have ever had, bar none.
It was chock full of mammoth, mouth-watering chunks of stew beef that chewed like butter and were as flavorful as can be.
Complementing the savory meat was an eclectic assortment of vegetables including corn, carrots and peas, all deliciously prepared.
Along with a bag of chips this cup of deliciousness ran me a frugal $3.50. A bowl costs just $5.50.
Other items on Wednesday's menu included a grilled cheese and fries or soup at $2.50 or a BLT for $3.50.
OuR House Café is open between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. They won't be open tomorrow, however, because it's a teacher workshop day.
And remember when you go down there and get a great meal for a great price, you're also helping these teen learn how to be an entrepreneur in the food industry: That's almost as satisfying as the meal!
