For more than 100 years Spaniards and Hispanics across the globe have followed the tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve.

I will be doing that again tonight at the stroke of midnight.

Martha T. Soto Galicia

The idea is to eat one grape for every stroke of the bell that tolls in the new year.

If you finish all 12 by the time the clock strikes midnight you'll have good luck and prosperity in 2021; the 12 grapes represent the 12 months of the new year.

And while it may be just folklore or fancy, there are few of us who would risk a year of prosperity and happiness by ignoring this centuries-old traditions.

As a proud Cuban-American my family continues this tradition not only because it's fun, but because, who knows, why take a chance?

So get your grapes and have a prosperous and happy 2021.

It's got to be better than what we just went through.

God bless and Happy New Year from all of us at The Rochester Voice.

Presidente, de la Rochester Voice
