SANFORD, Maine - A Sanford woman was seriously burned on Friday night due to smoking while being on oxygen to help her breathe.

Paula Pierce. 67, was transported to Maine Medical Center for severe burns. She was injured while smoking inside her apartment at 17 Washington St. around 8 p.m.

Neighbors heard the apartment's smoke detector and called 911.

There was minor fire damage to the apartment and smoke and water damage to adjoining units.

Oxygen vapors are highly flammable and those using oxygen are warned not to have any open flames nearby. Two Maine residents died earlier this year from smoking while on oxygen.

Her condition was not immediately available today.
