ROCHESTER - An unidentified woman was fatally shot overnight on South Main Street in the area of Friendly's restaurant.

The Attorney General's Office has confirmed an investigation is under way.

According to a statement from the Attorney General's office, officers responded to the area around midnight for a reported shooting incident that apparently involved two groups of people.

Upon arrival, officers discovered three adults, including an adult female with an apparent gunshot wound. That female was transported to a hospital where she later died.

Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

An autopsy is expected later today to determine the exact cause and manner of her death, after which another press release is expected, Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley told The Rochester Voice.

A worker at Friendly's this morning who did not give his name said there was a large police presence there overnight, with crime tape up in areas all the way from the Cumberland Farms on Knight Street to the First Congregationalist Church.

Crime scene tape was removed this morning around 7 a.m., said Samantha Arsenault, a worker at the restaurant.

The victim has only been identified as an adult female.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Geoff Moore at the Rochester Police Department at (603) 330-7140.
