Police are trying to locate this female who police say may have had a confrontation with the suspect in the Sanford Walmart parking lot minutes before the attempted robbery, lower right.

SANFORD - Sanford Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a woman who appeared to have an earlier confrontation with the suspect in Tuesday's attempted robbery of a Sanford motel.

Police also released on Wednesday a video of the attempted robbery that shows the suspect trying unsuccessfully to wrestle a laptop away from the female clerk who remains calm.

As part of their investigation police are seeking to speak with the woman who spoke with the suspect in the Sanford Walmart parking lot about 20 minutes before he tried to rob the Super 8 motel on Main Street.

Surveillance images show the unidentified female was putting bags in her vehicle when the suspect passed by her, doubled back and confronted her, according to a Sanford Police press release. A brief interaction took place between the two, but it did not appear that they were acquainted with the suspect walking away after the 30-second encounter.

The attempted robbery took place about 20 minutes later around 8:20 p.m. when the suspect, thought to be in his 20s, walked in to the motel's front desk, displayed a knife and demanded money.

The female clerk appears to calmly refuse to cooperate. When the suspect tries to grab a laptop off the inside counter, she wrestles it away and appears to begin dialing a number on her cellphone. Then she walks out of frame which is when she presumably locked herself in a backroom as reported in an earlier police press release. The suspect fled from the area on foot.

He is described as being about 6'0'' and weighing 170-180 pounds. On the night of the incident he was wearing a horizontal stripe dark blue and grey hoodie. During the robbery attempt, he kept his hoodie close around his face while brandishing a silver-bladed knife.

Tipsters who have information about who this unidentified female is are asked to call Detective Chad Allen at 207-324-9170, Ext 223. After hours call the Sanford Police Department at 207-324-3644.
