ALFRED, Maine - The number of COVID-19 cases identified at the York County Jail has grown to 68, York County Sheriff William King said on Wednesday.

Among the infected are 46 inmates, 19 correction officers, two from the government building and one support staffer assigned to the jail.

On July 9 King reported that an individual arrested and brought to the jail the day before had been admitted after being found asymptomatic and free of the virus as determined by a COVID screening tool.

As part of COVID protocols he was subsequently tested and the test came back positive.

Officials have not said whether or not they believe the July case led to the outbreak.
